Imagine the area to be set up like a clock with the statue of the Man in the centre. The app also helps you find your way around the playa. Part of the preparation is to download the official Burning Man app “Time to Burn” which lists the entire catalogue of workshops and events so you can pick your favourites and plan your schedule in advance (here’s where my German structured nature kicks in). Other than that, leave your wallet at home. Money is only needed to purchase ice packs and coffee at the centre point cafe. So, think about how you want to contribute to this system. People simply choose to gift you (alcohol, food, massages, etc.) without expecting anything in return. It feels very liberating to experience a gift-based economy, meaning that there is no money involved in the exchange of goods. However, for those who do, there is such a variety of open bars that very generously will serve you anything you want – from sangria, champagne to vodka. As previously mentioned, I choose not to drink alcohol. Trust me, there is alcohol served throughout the entire festival – so no need to bring your own. I treated myself to a zebra outfit which keeps me warm at night and is the cutest thing ever. If you do have space in your luggage, I’d highly recommend getting a onesie. But no need to stress, as there are “boutiques” around where you can find your perfect outfit – free of charge. They spend hours and hours looking for the perfect accessories or even designing their own outfits. You will notice that burners take their outfits very seriously. Themed clothes fall into the category of really nice to have. I once witnessed a guy who got all upset when someone took “his” communal bike at the outer ends of the playa which meant that he had to walk back all the way to the centre point… Far from ideal, but no reason to get upset. So, it’s really great to have your own for extra mobility and independence. While there are communal green bikes provided, you have to remember that they are exactly that – communal, meaning that they are shared, and you can’t hang on to one. Highly recommended itemsīring a bicycle to cover the long distances on the playa. What I loved the most though was the coconut-based ice cream that someone handed me on a really hot day – totally unexpected and yet most welcome. And for those who don’t follow a vegetarian diet, it is probably easiest to get cans of tuna, dried beef etc.Īlso, keep in mind that many of the camps offer snacks 24/7 – so while you want to stick to the principle of radical self-reliance, it is a most welcome surprise when out of the blue you are offered pancakes in the morning, hand-made fries at lunch time or cheese sandwiches at night. My favourite source of energy though is coconut water! Especially when kept cold, it is the most refreshing energy drink on the playa. These snacks will give you the energy you need. Cereals last and so do apple sauce, nuts and dried fruit. Of course, most of the fresh salads, fruits and vegetables I brought along perished within the first 24 hours… what lasted a few more days were oranges, apples and melon. As someone who lives on greens, I found it very challenging at first to bring food that lasts me for 10 days. Unless you bring your own cooler (and are prepared to spend time queuing up at the ice truck) or have access to a communal one, purchase only food that will last in temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius. Baby Wipes – for that moment of freshness.Comfortable Footwear to protect your feet from the acidic ground.Tent, mattress and sleeping bag (it can be freezing cold at night).Plenty of water (pre-purchase along with your Burner Express Ticket).Fairy lights that help others to see you at night, so you don’t get run over or yelled at.Ski goggles to protect your eyes from the dust and sand storms.Yes, there are buses from where the burner express drops you off, but you still want to be a minimalist when it comes to packing. When getting to Black Rock City, it’s like landing on another planet. To help you prepare for this adventure of a lifetime, I have put this survival guide together. While in the previous part, I talked about Tickets, Logistics, Accommodation & more, this article gives you an idea of what to pack (and what NOT to bring).Īs always, less is more, especially when travelling by plane and bus, you want to limit your luggage to what you can comfortably carry. Can you already feel the excitement when you think of your upcoming Burning Man Adventure?!
